A Massive Site
While many NAs are a quarter section in size, Lloyd Creek is massive – nearly 6 square km! Access is limited to the eastern portion. Numerous ATV tracks were seen going into the NA during a recent drive-by. Inside the site, the tracks may peter out quickly or lead to extensive disturbances. There is only one way to find out, go and visit!
The field trip will is planned for September 30 with October 1st and 4th held in reserve for weather-alternates (so far so good, fingers crossed).
Who Can Come/Invited?
- SAPAA Board Members.
- SAPAA Members and friends.
- Individuals interested in SAPAA but not YET a member.
- Government officials.
There is no cost to participate nor reimbursement for mileage, etc. Attendees are encouraged to complete a Site Inspection for the site(s) afterwards. Training on the form will be offered in the field and prior to this trip.
Cautions, Details, and Risks
- This is an all day activity in heavily forested areas well away from amenities (no bathrooms, running water, public transit, etc.).
- By signing up, you are attesting that you are comfortable in such a semi-wilderness environment.
- Trails may be great or non-existent – a site inspection, such as this, is the only way to find out. Planned for a rough walk possibly along rutted ATV tracks or dear trails.
- Bring lunch, fluids, appropriate clothing, and bug/sun screen.
- Plan and dress accordingly for the weather.
- The attendees will be broken into teams to maximize coverage of the NA. You will not be alone but you may be with a small group of individuals you may not know.
- Rubber boots for hiking shoes are strongly recommended given recent rains, etc.
- Bear precautions (spray, noise, etc.) is required for this trip and also works on love-sick moose and deer.
- A hiking application and/or GPS with loaded maps is recommended.
Stops of Interest
(Other than the 1000h start, all other times are approximate and subject to change)
- Car pooling is NOT planned, however, you can make request in the registration and we will see if it is possible but no promises.
- 1000h: Meet at the Village at Pigeon Lake, Petro Canada gas Station.
- 1400h: About 2-4 hours of visiting.
- Depending on the day of the week, donuts in Calmar, milkshakes in Thorsby, or coffee at Pigeon Lake.
- 1600h: Finish site visit.
