2024-10-07: Nestow – Field Trip

Nestow’s inspection on October 7, 2024, revealed moderate disturbances primarily from invasive species and OHV tracks in the northern region, while the southern area exhibited tree cutting and legacy-dumping near. There is a need for cleanup, fencing, and public awareness to protect the site’s natural beauty.

Nestow was a conciliation prize after an excursion to Tawatina NA showed this site to be impassable (see 2024-10-07: Tawatinaw NA). Hubert opted to go home and the remaining members broke into two crews. Susan and Manna explored the Northern portion of Nestow while Madeline, Patsy, and Phrank the southern bit.

Moderately Disturbed

North Team Observations

The North team (Susan and Manna) visited two areas on either side of the RR. There is some incursion of invasive species and OHV tracks are prevalent on the Eastern portion. The latter is facilitated by the Jack Pine forest, sandy soil, and easy access. The Western portion, a wetland, was less accessible and so also less disturbed.

South Team Observations

A dozen or so trees were cut in the past few weeks of the site visit. This was near to a legacy dump reflecting long term abuse of the site. A formerly wet area gave a good example of a transition from a wet to a dry forest cover. The birch trees are been displaced with Alders while ferns and mosses abound.

How Natural?: commentsQ32We visited two small portions of the northernmost section of the PNT. The sandy hillside/meadow had some invasive plant species (Crepis tectorum – annual hawk’s-beard) and a vehicle track leading off Range Rd 245A into the interior. The wetland area to the west of RR 245A was quite unspoiled, with no evidence of human incursion. There was evidence of past fire in both areas that we visited.
