2025-06-28 – iNaturalist Field Training

The iNaturalist application is an essential tool for nature identification and documentation. On June 28, 2025, at Sherwood Park Natural Area, SAPAA will provide beginner lessons. Experienced botanists are encouraged to attend and share their expertise. Pre-registration is required and priorities are given to SAPAA and Nature Alberta members. Attendees should prepare for outdoor conditions.

Registration is now closed as this event is full. Thank you for your interest!

The social media application iNaturalist is one of many that individuals venturing into protected areas will carry. It is also the preferred application of SAPAA to measure the biophysical inventory of the sites.

During this 2-hour session, experienced botanists will coach even the most green-illiterate newbie on how to identify common Alberta native (and invasive) plants. Prior to this session, be sure that you have downloaded and logged into your iNaturalist account on your smart phone. There is no Wi-Fi at the Natural Area so not something you want to be doing in field.

Details

There is no cost to attend but you must pre-register. Details are:

  • THIS EVENT IS FULL – THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST.
  • Date/Time: June 28, 2025 in the morning (exact times and meeting location sent out to those who have registered in advance).
  • Where: Sherwood Park Natural Area.
  • Who: Priority will be given to SAPAA members and members of a Nature Alberta affiliated club. Members of the public welcome noting the above priority.
  • What: Identification of common native and invasive plant species typically found in the metro Edmonton area.

Risks Associated with this Event

Unlike many other Natural Areas, SherwoodPark-na is close to an urban area, has well groomed trails, and clear signage. The site will probably be filled with families and visitors so wildlife encounters are unlikely. Risks associated with this trip include:

  • This is a 2-hour activity in a light wilderness area well away from amenities (no bathrooms, running water, public transit, etc.).
  • By signing up, you are attesting that you are comfortable in such an environment.
  • Bring snacks, fluids, appropriate clothing, and bug/sun screen.
  • Plan and dress accordingly for the weather.
  • As necessary, the attendees may be broken up into smaller groups to ensure the best possible learning experience.
  • Good walking shoes are recommended.
  • You must have an iNaturalist account, have the application loaded on your smart phone, and have at least a basic understanding how it works before attending.

Registration

Thank you for your interest, this event is full and registration is now closed.
