This is a temporary page in aiding transitioning from Telus to WordPress. It will be deleted sometime after 2022-06-30.

File Preparation & First Pass Upload

[HUBERT & PATSY (a little bit of [LINDA]]

  1. For each pdf and word document, change the name of the word and pdf files to conform to the filename style guide.  
  2.  I have created the compliant names in the GSheet (column D). 
  3. If the name is [REVIEW], there is an issue such as:
    1.  Two rows with the same name
    2. The name of a natural area is a Rangeland, etc.
    3. We will need to review these rows with [LINDA].
  4. Files are located: 2021-WebTransfer > 2010-11_Data > Protected Areas Info > PAInfo
    1. >EcologicalReserves
    2. >Heritage Rangelands
    3. >NaturalAreas
      1. OC
      2. PNT_CNT
    4. >WildernessAreas
  5. The Protected Area – Style Guide | SAPAA ( is available here for reference. 
  6. Proceed with the next steps only when the domain name has been successfully transferred
  7. Once a filename has been updated, upload it to WordPress. 

File Naming Conventions and Metadata

Naming conventions for these files are as follows:

  • File name suffix indicates the type of protected area the file represents (e.g. na = Natural Area).
  • Where a protected area has both an Order in Council (OC) and a Protected Notation (PNT) designation, two separate files were created by adding these abbreviations as ‘pre-suffix’ (e.g. [AREA]_OC-na.
  • Natural areas with the name of ‘Heritage Rangelands’ in their file name were given the pre-suffix abbreviation of “[AREA]-HertgRgld-na”.
  • Metadata for each file:

  1. Obtain the URL for the above loaded file and copy it (e.g. Control-C)
  2. Go to the Protected Area Location Sheet
  3. Highlight the respective Area file name (Column D). 
  4. Hyperlink the area to the relevant file (hint: Control-K is a short cut)
  5. Return to WordPress – protected area page and confirm the link works
  6. Once all areas have been uploaded, this is the end of the ‘lift and shift phase’ of the project

Review and Page Creation (November)

  1. [BOARD]: Select about ten protected areas to convert to a web page.
  2. [PATSY & HUBERT]: Ten Area Review
  3. On the above GDrive, visit the ten area word documents.
  4. Update the word documents with the content guide: Protected Area – Style Guide | SAPAA (
  5. Review and finalize the ten areas before proceeding to the web page creation.
  6. [PATSY & HUBERT]: Web Page Creation
  7. Create a webpage for the respective Protected area (Hint, generate a copy from the ‘Page’ menu).
  8. Update the area’s information per the instructions and the above review (Hint: paste as text, word contains a dog’s breakfast of HTML code).
  9. Complete basic formatting of the page
  10. [FRANK, PATSY & HUBERT]: Insert Statistical information about the area.
    1. Visit the control sheet for the areas.
    2. Select the respective area and generate the HTML table. 
    3. Paste the statistics in as custom HTML
  11. [CHRIS, FRANK (& KRYSTIN?)]: Insert protected area map into the page via Custom HTML
  12. [HUBERT]: Review and publish the page 
  13. Note the word documents cease being the ‘master record’ for an area at this moment – the web page is now the record.
