Other Information

As the name suggests, this NA is located near the geographical centre of Alberta, roughly 25 km northwest of Fort Assiniboine. The site protects mixedwood forests along Clearwater Creek. The site was established or expanded as part of the Special Places program (Alberta Parks web site, 2012).

Geographic Center of Alberta is equidistant from each of the straight-line border segments to the NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, and WEST.[HT: not exactly true; see below] A short hike of 3 km will take you from the information kiosk at the highway through this natural area to the cairn marking the Centre of Alberta. The Natural Area surrounding the cairn has a system of hiking and biking trails for you to enjoy [1].

3 1/2 of Alberta’s 4 Borders Follow Geographic Constructs. Its southern border is the 49th parallel north and its northern border is the 60th parallel. To the east, the border with Saskatchewan follows the 110th meridian. The western border is the only one which is irregular. It starts at the north at the 120th parallel until it reaches the Continental Divide at the Rocky Mountains [2]. Thus, the geographic centre is relatively easy to calculate at 54°30’00.0″N 115°00’00.0″W 54.5°N, 115.0°W . Interestingly, according to Google, this point is about 45 m northeast of the monument.

[HT: This would actually not be the center of Alberta, based on area weighting. It’s simply the midpoint between the northern and southern parallels (60/49) and the midpoint of the northern parallel (120/110). I’m not sure we need this]
