Other Information

OH Ranch Heritage Rangeland contributes to the protection of native grassland and celebrates the significant ranching history of the area. The designation of the site is a result of cooperation between several government agencies and the owners of the OH Ranch.

The site contains grassland, aspen-dominated forests and willow shrub lands. In montane areas, there are lodgepole pine- and white spruce-dominated forests. Wildlife species include wolves, cougars, coyotes, grizzly bears, black bears, moose, mule deer, elk and white-tailed deer. Grouse, hawks, eagles, falcons, owls and waterfowl have also been observed in the area.

OH Ranch History starts in 1881 when Orville Hawkins Smith (from which the name OH is derived) and Lafayette French started ranching and registered the OH Brand. The site hosted a NWMP cabin and the ranch changed hands a number of times until it was purchased by D.K. Seaman in 1987. In 2008, the site was designated as a protected area and represents a large area of native grasslands [1].
