SAPAA is evolving through its SAPAA 2.0 initiative, focusing on functions previously handled by the Alberta Government. This multi-year effort aims to ensure an Occupational Health and Safety compliant volunteer program by 2025. Challenges include funding and volunteer availability, but the board remains optimistic about progress and community support.

Helping to (White) Spruce Up the Place
Unfortunately, a change in research priorities has resulted in this project being cancelled. Ferf wishes to thank everyone who expressed interest and encourages you to go out an iNaturalist anyway.
The white spruce, Picea glauca, is a familiar conifer. A UofA researcher needs SAPAA’s help identifying stands of white spruce this summer through iNaturalist observations. While you are there, why not submit a Site Inspection report!

On September 30, 2024, SAPAA Field Trip partricipants conducted an inspection at Lloyd Creek Natural Area. The rolling terrain supports aspen forest with a diverse understory giving the Natural Area a high naturalness score (3/4). Invasives are confined to the trails, created and still used by ATV riders. Recommendations are for weed control and improved signage.

Threepoint Creek rate a a Naturalness score 3 despite limited disturbances from ATV tracks. A beaver dam has caused flooding in the western area.
