Other Information

Frog Lake Massacre. The Frog Lake National Historic Site south of the lake marks the site of an infamous event in Canadian history, a tragic episode in the North-West Rebellion led by Louis Riel. Nine members of the Frog Lake settlement lost their lives in an uprising and later eight members of the Plains Cree band were hanged for their part in it, in Battleford, Saskatchewan in 1885. The National Historic Site encompasses a cemetery and a commemorative cairn erected in 1924 and administered by Parks Canada [3]. It was also declared a Provincial Historic Resource by the Alberta government in 1976.
