Halfway Lake Natural Area


This Natural Area consists of two quarter-sections separate from each other, with Taylor Lake lying between them on a northwest-southeast axis.

Other Information

The north quarter-section of this site is primarily wetland, with a dense stand of black spruce, large bog birch-willow wetland, and a small area of sandy upland with jack pine and aspen. The south quarter has gently undulating to hilly terrain with aspen-jack pine forest. Halfway Lake lies in the Boreal Forest Natural Region, Dry Mixedwood Subregion. (Alberta Parks website, 2012).

The upper quarter is located north of the community of Halfway Lake. The south quarter is roughly bisected by a low-lying marshy area. This site is located in a small arc of Natural Areas with Bridge Lake to the north and Taylor Lake, Redwater River, and Halfmoon Lake Natural Areas to the east and south.

    There are some mysteries that could be solved – but are just as fun to ponder. Halfway Lake NA is one such. Why is it called this when Taylor Lake lies halfway between the two portions of the site. For that matter, why not call it Taylor Lake NA? Or why the same protected areas when they are so far apart? Enough pondering, I will just have to visit these slices of Alberta on snowshoes in a few months.
