Other Information
Modeste Creek Natural Area is comprised of rolling uplands covered in aspen with some balsam poplar and white spruce over a rich shrub and herb understory. The creek is terraced with small spring-fed ponds. Plant fossil material has been found in outcroppings on the steep banks along the creek (Alberta Parks website, 2012).
There are four parcels of land all straddling some portion of Modeste Creek as it flows north towards the North Saskatchewan River.
Modeste Saskatchewan Natural Area encompasses steep banks, river flats and terraces along the North Saskatchewan River valley. There are small creeks in several parcels, including part of Modeste Creek. Most areas are dominated by aspen forest with scattered balsam poplar, birch and white spruce. There are also pure stands of white spruce and birch and a variety of shrublands (Alberta Parks website, 2012).
There are five parcels of land with the southernmost straddling Modeste Creek itself. Three of the remaining five land-parcels abut the south shore of the North Saskatchewan River. The fifth area is on the north side of the river. An attempted visit in the Fall of 2024 indicates it is inaccessible except from the river or with landowner permission [1].

Alberta has some large blocks of parkland. Think of the mountain, Elk Island or Wood Buffalo system of parks and Crown land. Then there is Modeste. Two Natural Areas scattered across nine sites. This means nine areas for the local bio-mass to do its thing and nine places to go and visit!
