White Earth Valley Natural Areas


These Natural Areas are part of a complex of Crown land surrounding Long Lake about 100 km northeast of Edmonton. There are four distinct legal entities: Long Lake Provincial Park with a PP-PNT portion adjacent to the west and White Earth Valley Natural Area adjacent to the south with both OC and PNT portions.

Other Information

White Earth Valley Natural Area contains a variety of habitats. Marshes provide habitat for Blue Herons, Common Loons and a variety of ducks, as well as Moose, Beaver, Muskrat and Mink. Perch and Northern Pike inhabit the lakes. Wildlife includes White-tailed and Mule deer, Black Bears, Wolves and Coyotes. The hillsides and meadows support a variety of shrubs and wildflowers (Alberta Parks website, 2012).

Area Activities

  • Hiking: The White Earth Trail is 17 km long.  The path winds through a wide variety of rich habitats, where an abundance of diverse plants and wildlife thrive.  It’s accessible from adjacent Long Lake Provincial Park during the operating season (May to October), with parking at the trailhead.  The trail can also be accessed year-round from Township Road 621 at the southern end of the Natural Area.
  • Horseback Riding: There are multi-use trails here but no equestrian facilities.
  • Hunting: Restricted to a small area. Hunters should be aware of the potential for conflicts with other recreational users.

Long List of Long Lakes. In Alberta, there are nine lakes and one hamlet officially named ‘Long Lake’. There are another 23 lakes locally labeled as Long Lake. This is one of the more popular names in Alberta geographic naming [1].
