SAPAA periodically offers field trips and other organized events for its (potential) members, invited guests, and interested individuals. While every effort is taken to run these in a safe manner – there are no guarantees in life. In addition. many of these field trips go to (semi) wilderness areas. A Protected Area exists to protect the original natural state of the site – dangers included. Before coming on a trip, you must carefully read the following to make an informed decision as to whether or not to join a SAPAA trip.

By via clicking on the relevant button or selecting a choice on a registration form, you are electronically signing this document that you assume certain risks. Please read carefully.

1. This is a binding legal agreement as a Participant attending a SAPAA activity.

Description of Risks

2. The Participant is participating voluntarily in the Activities. The activity involves driving to/from a remote natural area in rural Alberta along roads that may be poorly maintained. Once on a site, walking and travelling through a site which may not have any defined trails or foot paths. Crossing water logged, frozen water courses which may be in various states of melt or stability based on the season, time of day, hydrological characteristics of the geography. 

In consideration of the Participant’s participation in the Activities, the Parties hereby acknowledge that they are aware of the risks, dangers and hazards associated with or related to the Activities, and may be exposed to such risks, dangers and hazards. The risks, dangers and hazards include, but are not limited to, injuries from:

  • Transportation to/from the site(s) to be visited;
  • Inclement and unpredictable weather that may stand or delay the return of the group;
  • Overusing, exerting and stretching various muscle groups and strenuous cardiovascular activity as a result of hiking, climbing, and walking through a site;
  • Walking through a remote area along animal trails with few if any human activity to guide direction or destination;
  • Vigorous physical exertion, rapid movements and quick turns and stops;
  • Falling to the ground due to slips, trips or uneven, slippery or irregular terrain or surfaces;
  • Contact, colliding or being struck by others falling;
  • Failing to participate within one’s abilities, skill and within designated areas;
  • Becoming lost or separated from the group or the group becoming split up;
  • Extreme weather conditions which may result in frostbite, hypothermia, snowstorms, sunstroke or lightning strikes;
  • Encounters with animals or plants including allergic reactions;
  • Infectious disease contracted through viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi which may be transmitted through direct or indirect contact;
  • Other risks normally associated with participation in the Activities;
  • A lack of toilet facilities; and
  • Remoteness from nearby emergency response services. 

3. Furthermore, the Parties are aware that: 

  • Injuries sustained may be severe, paralyzing or fatal;
  • The Participant may experience anxiety or embarrassment while challenging themselves during the activities, events and programs of SAPAA;
  • Risk of injury is reduced if the Participant follows all rules established for participation; and
  • Risk of injury increases as the Participant becomes fatigued.

4. In consideration of SAPAA accepting the Participant’s attendance of this event, the Parties agree that SAPAA, and its respective directors, officers, committee members, members, employees, volunteers, participants, agents and representatives are not responsible for any injury, personal injury, damage, property damage, expense, loss of income or loss of any kind suffered by the Participant during, or as a result of, any of the Activities organized by SAPAA.

5. The Parties confirm that the Participant(‘s): 

  • Physical condition is sufficient to allow participation in this site visit and the activities, events and programs of SAPAA;
  • Have been provided sufficient information about Activities and the associated risks and hazards so that they are aware of the effect of this agreement;
  • Agrees to abide by the Rules and Regulations imposed by SAPAA, in association with the Activities, and to follow the instructions of the officials during the Activities; and
  • Have read this agreement understand it, have executed this agreement voluntarily, and that this agreement is to be binding upon the Parties, their heirs, executors, administrators and representatives.

6. In addition, the Parties:

  • Understands that SAPAA complies with privacy legislation and takes every effort to protect the privacy of its members and participants involved in an activity; 
  • Acknowledge that SAPAA will NEVER  sell or distribute your personal information to any other third party not listed herein, or unless compelled to by legal recourse; 
  • Authorize SAPAA, to collect and use personal information about the Parties which relates in any way to the Activities, including without limitation the publication of photographs in newsletters and promotional materials, and the posting of photographs, videos, articles, rosters, statistics, images and results on the SAPAA website;
  • Grant permission to SAPAA, to photograph and/or record the Parties image and/or voice, and to use this material to promote SAPAA, through any form of and agree that the audio/visual material and copyright will remain the sole property of SAPAA, and waive any claim to remuneration for use of audio/visual materials used for these purposes; and
  • Understand that they may withdraw such consent at any time by contacting SAPAA at webmaster@sapaastewards.com. SAPAA will advise as to the implications of such withdrawal.
